The image on the left is an actual NBC Universal advertisement from a magazine in 2010, promoting the Jimmy Smits television show, "Outlaw" (originally called "Garza").

The image to the right is a fan-made item for "Rex is Not Your Lawyer," mirroring the overall style of the official ad campaign.

In 2009, David Tennant was awarded a Critics Award in Scotland; the photo of him in the yellow tie is from that event.

Every year, television and movie shows are released as "For Your Consideration" DVDs to generate interest among those associated with the industry.

These were four of the DVDs sent out in 2010 ("Undercovers," "Outlaw," "Outsourced" and "Chase"), as photographed on the shelf of a Hollywood-area Goodwill store. (Incidentally, if you are a SAG-AFTRA or other Guild member, it is illegal to sell, loan, donate or otherwise have a FYC DVD leave your possession.) "Rex" would have looked like this, had NBC Universal made one... they did not.

This style of rainbow-themed advertising was part of the NBC Universal "More Colorful" campaign that year.

This is another fan-made image, based on an actual billboard location along Vine Boulevard in Hollywood / Los Angeles, California. No billboards were ever made to promote "Rex," since the show's pilot was never picked up for production.

Here are a few rare behind-the-scenes photos taken by production staff on location with "Rex is Not Your Lawyer." The first one is yellow grip tape with David Tennant's name and character name, attached to a trailer. The second one is an example of the mass of power cords that were required to film the pilot.

Be sure to check out Chris Oliver's food blog, "Star Food Stylist Blog" to see several photographs of the food prepared for the pilot (Duck a l'Orange, slugs, brie and grapes, and salads for three.

These items were used in the upscale restaurant setting in which Rex Alexander meets his mother and her new boyfriend, Dr. Barry Cohen (Rex's psychiatrist).

The Hilton Checkers

The Hilton Checkers Hotel, 535 South Grand Avenue in Los Angeles, California--originally called The Mayflower Hotel--was built in 1927 on a lot that was only 60 feet wide and 160 feet deep, and designed by architect Charles Whittlesey with Spanish-style ornamentation.

"The Checkers" was the location for several indoor scenes in the pilot--the bar, a stairwell, and a hotel room / suite. (As a side note for fans of "The West Wing," the episode "Take This Sabbath Day" was also shot at the Checkers.)

While at the hotel in December 2009, the "Rex" production also held an outdoor shoot at the hotel's rooftop pool, in which a frustrated Rex Alexander (David Tennant) floats on an air raft with a washcloth over his head. (In the finished pilot, the red word "Hilton" and its logo are digitally removed from the roof.)

After the scene was shot, David Tennant exited the hotel through the front doors, turned right, and was escorted by crew members to a nearby white van for transportation. He wore a dark blue coat, white shirt, blue pants and no socks or shoes, only beige flip-flops.

The van circled the block in front of the hotel and turned left on West 6th Street, then turned left again on Olive Street (perhaps this was the influence for David's choice of his daughter's name?), then it turned left again on West 5th Street and proceeded to its next location.

Aroma Golf Range

The Aroma Golf Range, 3680 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, was utilized for a scene between Rex Alexander (David Tennant) and his friend Bruce (Jerry O'Connell).

The role of Bruce was originally given to actor Sendhil Ramamurthy, who withdrew for unknown reasons. O'Connell's appearance on set for the first day of location filming therefore came as a surprise to fans of "Doctor Who" that showed up. A primary reason for the quick hire of O'Connell is because he knew how to play golf; Tennant had to take a few quick lessons at the Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles, in Rancho Palos Verdes.
